Inflation in October at a record high of 10.6% in the eurozone and 11.5% in the EU

Eurozone year-on-year inflation hit a record 10.6% in October, 0.1 point lower than initially estimated, and in the European Union (EU) it was set at a new high of 11.5% , Eurostat announced on Thursday. .

According to data from the EU’s statistical service, annual inflation in the euro area was 4.1% in October 2021 and 4.4% in the 27 Member States as a whole, as measured by the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP).

In the monthly variation, the 10.6% annual inflation rate in the Eurozone in October is similar to the 9.9% in September and the 11.5% in the EU at 10.9%.

In the flash estimate of 31 October, Eurostat had pointed to an inflation rate of 10.7% in the euro countries.

Among Member States, the highest annual inflation rates were recorded in Estonia (22.5%), Lithuania (22.1%) and Hungary (21.9%) and the lowest in France (7.1%), Spain (7. 3%) and Malta (7.4%).

Compared to September, annual inflation fell in 11 Member States, remained unchanged in three and increased in another 13.

In Portugal, inflation – as measured by the HICP – reached 10.6% in October, in line with that of the euro area, up from 9.9% in September and 1.8% in the same month of 2021.

Inflation in the Eurozone has been accelerating since June 2021, mainly due to the rise in energy prices, reaching record levels since November 2021.
