“Great progress”: Donald Trump optimistic before the resumption of conversations with China

These discussions in Switzerland constitute the first face -to -face meeting of senior officials of the two largest economies in the world since the US president imposed a 145% surcharge last month in China’s goods.

Conversations between China and the United States in Geneva to try to resolve the commercial war between the two countries must resume Sunday, and that Donald Trump expressed his optimism about the progress made the previous day. “Very good meeting today with China, Switzerland. Many things have been discussed, many have been approved. A restart has been negotiated in a friendly but constructive way. We want, for the good of China and the United States, that China opens to US companies.

A sign of the importance of the problems, the two capitals sent high -ranking representatives to Geneva this weekend for these negotiations: the United States Secretary of the United States, Scott Besent, the representative of the trade of Jamieson Greer and the Vice Prime Chinese Minister, He Lifeng.

It is not a unilateral fall in American customs tasks

These discussions are the first face -to -face meeting of senior officials of the two largest world economies since Donald Trump imposed a 145% surcharge last month in China’s goods, in addition to pre -existing customs tasks. Beijing, who promised to fight “until the end” these surcharges, taking reprisals with 125% of customs duties in American products. Result: bilateral exchanges stop practically and markets have experienced violent disorders.

On Friday, Donald Trump had made a gesture by suggesting reducing the customs tasks that he imposed on Beijing at 80%. But his spokesman Karoline Leavitt hastened to clarify that Washington would not abuse her taxes unilaterally and that China also had to make concessions.

Difficult to consider a return to normal

The discussions began on Saturday in Geneva at the Opulent Villa of the Permanent Representative of Switzerland with the United Nations in Geneva, on the shores of Lake Geneva. “The contact established in Switzerland is an important step to promote the resolution of litigation,” said the official Chinese news agency Nouvelle. The simple fact that these discussions take place “are the good news for commercial and financial markets,” said Gary Hufbauer, of the Peterson Institute of International Economics (PII). However, this expert is “very skeptical about a return to a normal situation in commercial relations between China and the United States.”

The Vice Primer Chinese Minister arrived in Geneva, looks like an asset: Beijing announced on Friday a jump of 8.1% of its exports in April, a figure four times higher than the forecasts of analysts. But exports to the United States fell into almost 18%.
