Emmanuel Macron said Thursday in X that he had reaffirmed the Chinese president Xi Jinping, during a telephone interview, the will of France to continue building a strong economic relationship with China and advance as soon as possible on the issue of Cognac.
“I reaffirmed France’s will to continue building a strong economic relationship with China,” added Emmanuel Macron.
In January 2024, China opened an anticompetitive survey on imports based on wine from the European Union, essentially the
French cognac. In April he decided to extend his research, offering European producers a stay before the possible surcharge.
During the same call, Xi Jinping said he was ready to “work hand in hand” with the European Union “to face global challenges and achieve more beneficial results for the parties and for the world.” The Chinese leader has also ordered his French counterpart that “jointly preserves the rules of international trade and world economic order, and practices real multilateralism.”
