Industrial production in France fell 1.4% in April compared to March, particularly due to lower electricity and gas production, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) said on Friday.
This drop in industrial production follows two consecutive months of increase.
In April, production decreased by 5.0% in extractive, energy and water industries, penalized by a clear fall in the production and distribution of electricity and gas (-5.5%).
“This month is characterized by particularly soft temperatures that are placed in April 2025 in the fifth row in the hottest April since 1900,” Insee said in a press release.
Manufacturing production has also been registered at 0.6%.
The Cokéfaction and Refining sector collapsed by 14.0%and the manufacture of transport equipment decreased by 2.4%, including the automotive industry (-0.4%) and aeronautical, naval or locomotive construction (-3.7%), detailed. The manufacture of electrical, electronic and IT equipment fell by 1.9%.
Manufacturing production has also been registered in decrease
On the other hand, on the other hand, the food industry has recovered in +1.1% and the manufacture of other industrial goods, such as chemistry, pharmacy or metallurgy, increased by 0.3%.
Accumulated during the three months that went from February to April, industrial production fell by 0.8% and the manufacturing production of 1.0% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Production fell into the manufacture of “other industrial products” (-1.8%) and that of electrical, electronic and computer equipment (-2.0%), as well as in the food industry (-0.5%).
However, during these three months, it increased in the manufacture of transport equipment (+2.0%), cokéfaction and refining (+4.2%) and extractive industries, energy and water (+0.5%).
In the construction sector, production increased by 0.8% in April for a month, including buildings (+1.7%), but has dropped 1.5% for a year, between February and April.
