Objective 2028: Germany shows its ambitions in terms of rearming and wants to launch purchases quickly

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz advocates a massive restart in the country and points to investments and short -term purchases.

The countdown is launched. The German army, the Bundeswehr, is three years old to acquire the necessary equipment to defend against a possible attack against Russia in NATO, the military purchasing manager said on Saturday.

The Bundeswehr inspector, Carsten Breuer, recently stated that Russia could, since 2029, “launch a large -scale attack against NATO territory.”

The army will have to have the entire necessary team a year earlier, because the “soldiers must still train with the new team,” he said.

He declared herself sure to achieve this, thanks to the current reduction of the procedures for the purchase of military equipment and the envelope of hundreds of billions of euros unlocked by the new Friedrich Merz government for defense expenses.

Its services will be submitted to Bundestag, the lower room of Parliament, projects to acquire equipment at the end of this year, he added, “mainly in heavy equipment”, such as “anti -aircraft tanks of the Skyranger type or the model that happens to the armored vehicle of Fuchs.”

Contracts have also been completed for the production of additional Leopard 2 combat tanks.

A crucial objective for the new chancellor

Friedrich Merz has restarted the Bundeswehr, a long fall, a priority of his coalition government with the social democrats, the objective is to turn it into “the most powerful conventional army in Europe.”

Deeply pacifist since the horrors of Nazism, the country has long neglected its defense, trusting American power within NATO, which has now become uncertain under the administration of Donald Trump.

The rearme had already been initiated under the previous Government of Olaf Scholz after the Russian War in Ukraine launched at the end of February 2022, but the new geopolitical agreement forced the country to accelerate it.

Bundeswehr must also remedy a serious personnel shortage.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius estimated the need for between 50,000 and 60,000 soldiers in the coming years to respond to the increase in defense capabilities claimed by the Atlantic Alliance on Thursday.

In 2024, the Army had more than 180,000 soldiers and established the objective of exceeding 203,000 by 2031.
