60,000 euros in 2024: why the tax on large yates pay almost nothing (between 80 and 160 times less than expected)

During its establishment in 2018, the Government was taking advantage of a profit of 5 to 10 million euros per year for state funds.

A straw. The French Tax on Yates of more than 30 meters reported only 60,000 euros in 2024, Nice-Matin reports. A disorderly sum in view of the objectives of this tax: when it was established in 2018, the Government was presenting between 5 and 10 million euros in tax revenues per year. Therefore, these 60,000 euros raised in 2024 are 80 to 160 times lower than the expectations expected by the government of the time.

Only five of these ships were taxes.

And it is not an accident of the course since the “Yates Tax” has been limited for years, between 2018 and 2019, only 82,500 euros were collected.

Recall that this tax points to great pleasure or sports ships that belong or use French residents, and aims to partially compensate for the exclusion of mobile property from the property tax base (IFI) that replaced the ISF. It was then a matter of increasing the Tax on the Annual Law of Francoing and Navigation of large ships.

The tax amount is between 30,000 and 200,000 euros per recreation boat and varies according to its duration and power.

Already in 2019, Joël Giraud, the Deputy Republic in Marche, and the General Rapporteur of the Finance Committee of the National Assembly, underlined in their information, report the “very disappointing” character of the performance of this tax.

Small controls

How to explain such flop? Especially because the number of ships in question is reduced a lot (there are some dozen).

It seems that many owners “forget” to pay the tax, especially because application methods are quite complex. At the same time, the General Directorate of Customs and Indirect Rights (DGDDI), which collects the tax, would not have tried to apply it. Joël Giraud asks about “dark explanations” of this administration.

“You have to go to the field and perform checks in another way, I don’t see how we can force them to do it” (but the yachts) “are not the priority of our administration,” he reacted to Manuela Dona, general secretary of the National Union of Customs Agents.

The evaluation of fiscal income also raises questions. According to Le Monde, the services in question “could not produce an adequate estimate, being the difficult plate to evaluate, within the extremely reduced deadlines assigned. So that the figure of 10 million euros, never confirmed by Bercy or Matignon, prospered.”

“We knew, professionals, such as state services in other places, that this tax could not generate so much money. They said anything, abounds Thierry Voisin, president of the European Committee for Professional Animilla.

When asked, the Ministry of Economy has not yet returned our request for comments.

In addition to state funds, the main victim of this tax belt is the National Rescue Company AT Sea, which would receive a beautiful part of the income.
