Before the resurgence of “unacceptable” behaviors, Ryanair will now inflict a fine of 500 euros to turbulent passengers

Concerned about “a notable increase” of behavioral problems in the plans, the Irish company indicates establishing a fine of 500 euros in addition to the legal procedures that are involved against turbulent passengers.

Irish airline Ryanair announced on Thursday the establishment of a fine of 500 euros against “disruptive passengers whose behavior leads to its landing of the plane.” The low -cost operator will continue “starting civil procedures against disruptive passengers, but now he will inflict a fine of at least 500 euros,” he said in a statement.

“Although cases are isolated that all airlines know, a disruptive behavior in such a confined and shared space is unacceptable,” said a spokesman for Ryanair, the largest European company in number of passengers transported.

Ryanair’s head, Michael O’Leary, known for his openness, was worried last August with a “remarkable increase” of behavioral problems in airplanes by passengers who consumed drugs and alcohol. According to him, this is a problem that concerns all of Europe, but particularly serious in the links between the United Kingdom and certain destinations such as Ibiza, known for its nightclubs. These are “the worst,” he said.

Prosecution committed

Ryanair no longer authorizes passengers to embark with a bottle, including water, in links with Ibiza. Certain flights from British airports such as Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh are particularly problematic. But there are also problems with flights to or from Ireland and Germany.

The company recently initiated the prosecution before the Irish justice against the passenger of a Dublin-Lanzarote flight, diverted to Porto in April 2024 due to its behavior. He had been arrested when he left the plane. The crew and the 160 passengers had been forced to spend the night in the Portuguese city, costs covered by the company, which also had to mobilize another plane and a new crew. The company claims more than 15,000 euros from the passenger.

Ryanair, who already claims to limit the sale of alcohol aboard their airplanes, asks the authorities to restrict passengers to two alcoholic beverages at airports, by using their boarding pass. The company, which serves 37 countries, mainly European, transported just over 200 million passengers during 2024-25 and points to 300 million passengers by 2034.
