The plane that crashed this Thursday, May 12 in takeoff in the northwest of India, with a total of 242 passengers and members of the already on-board crew London-Gatwick, was a Boeing 787. This is the first time that this Boeing model has crashed.
This plane, also known as “Dreamline”, is a particularly used model. A sign of its commercial success, the 787 recently approved the limit of the one billion passengers transported in just 14 years.
Boeing then declared that the world fleet of 787, composed of 1,175 devices, had made 5 million flights, transporting 480,000 passengers every day through more than 80 airlines. In total, Boeing registered 2,598 orders for 787, including 889 who were still waiting to date.
The Dreamliner program has also experienced many industrial setbacks. Between 2021 and 2023, deliveries were suspended several times, in particular due to fuselage and defects of breach assembly in manufacturing processes.
Designed to meet the growing demand for more efficient long -distance links, 787 is based on a structure composed of 50% of compound materials, the first for a size line. This reduced design would allow, according to Boeing, a 20% reduction in fuel consumption compared to old equivalent models.
The cause of the accident at this stage is unknown
At this stage, the American aeronautical manufacturer Boeing indicates that he is “informed of the first information” about the plane crash in India and “works to gather more information,” said a group spokesman in a statement transmitted to AFP. No progress has been made.
This new accident is a blow to the American company that has struggled to overcome a series of problems, including fatal accidents, with another plane model: the Boeing 737.
This will be another test for the Kelly Ortberg CEO, about to commemorate its first anniversary in the position. He had been appointed for this position to try to help the American manufacturer to solve a series of failures that asked questions about their future.
