German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the European Union approach on Monday in commercial negotiations with the United States, describing it as “too complicated.”
Speaking during an event organized by the BDI Industrial Federation, the Head of Government suggested that the EU should focus on the conclusion of agreements on “four or five main industries” to align with the US negotiation strategy.
“It’s not the right time”
Specifically mentioned the car, chemistry, pharmacy and mechanical construction, steel, as key sectors that should be a priority for the European Commission, responsible for commercial negotiations on behalf of the 27 member countries. These are also key sectors for the industry of the first European economy.
The European Commission, which negotiates trade agreements on the name of the EU, is under pressure to find common land with the United States.
After threatening to impose customs duties of 50% in European imports since June 1, Donald Trump had agreed at the end of May to postpone his entry into force until July 9. After several cycles of discussion, he said last week that Europeans “do not offer an agreement right at this time.”
