The European Parliament and the Council, which represents the twenty -seven years, agreed on Tuesday to extend a regulation that unites EU member states to reach 90% of their gas reserves before winter.
The obligation extends for two years, until the end of 2027, announced the Polish presidency of the EU Council in a press release.
This regulation was adopted in June 2022 after the drastic reduction of Russian supplies after the invasion of Ukraine. Its objective is to strengthen energy security and reduce Moscow dependence.
Additional flexibility
The agreement announced on Tuesday night corrects “a 200%compliance objective” and “introduces additional flexibilities that allow member states to adapt to market development,” according to the press release.
In particular, it makes it possible to reach this filling rate “at any time between October 1 and December 1, instead of the current deadline of November 1”.
Gas storage infrastructure covers about 30% of the gas consumption of the European Union during the winter months, according to the commission.
“By guaranteeing sufficient storage before winter, we protect our citizens and companies against price shocks and supply breaks,” said Marzena Czarecka, Minister of Polish Industry.
This agreement must still be formally approved and adopted by the European Parliament and the Council.
