Canada “delivered” Donald Trump by renouncing his technological giants that led the US president to break the commercial negotiations with his neighbor, said White House spokesman in Washington on Monday.
“It is very simple. Prime Minister (Mark) Carney and Canada have given up against President Trump and the United States of America. President Trump knows how to negotiate and knows that he governs the best country and the best economy on the planet,” said the spokesman for the White House, Karoline Leavitt at a press conference.
“Scandalous Tax”
Canada announced Sunday to renounce its Tax on Digital Services (TSN) that was going to enter into force on Monday, and the resumption of commercial negotiations with the United States, broken two days before by Donald Trump.
Determined in 2024, this 3% of the income of online advertising, sales platforms, social networks or the sale of personal data, directed in vehicles of private digital goods, Google, Apple, Meta (Facebook), Amazon or Microsoft. They are accused of taking advantage of the intangible nature of their activity to escape taxes. Donald Trump called this tax “direct and obvious” to the United States on Friday.
“Due to this scandalous tax, we ended all commercial discussions with Canada, with immediate effect,” he wrote on his Truth social platform, and added that the United States would communicate in Canada, within seven days, the level of customs tasks that would be imposed on it.
Then he had repeated his rhetoric around Canada during the weekend as the 51st American state. The US president also criticizes the European Union (EU) for implementing said tax, and makes it a lever for negotiation in commercial discussions with the European bloc.
