“They are afraid of judgment or sanction”: why employees use the

According to a de facto study, employees who use artificial intelligence to help them in their work tend to do so in secret. The phenomenon has a name, the “AI shadow”.

Use chatgpt yes, but in cunning. According to a recent study published by Indeed and carried out with the Census Institute throughout the census, the French use greatly artificial intelligence in the professional framework, but they really do not suppose. More than 2 out of 5 French assets (45%) interviewed now know the generative AI tools (such as Chatgpt, Gemini, Midjourney, etc.). This figure reaches 82% among students, compared to 46% of the people who are already employed and 38% of the unemployed questioned.

Not only are these tools now known, but they are used greatly. Among the employees, almost three out of five respondents (57 %) say they use AI assistants in their professional life, on average, twice a week. Except that employees use it discreetly. As to reserve train tickets at work or drag on Facebook, they hide to make their requests to their conversational robot.

“They fear losing their jobs”

Also according to the study in fact, only 11% of professionals who use the IA explicitly admit it. On the contrary, 17% never admit that they used an artificial intelligence tool.

“Employees are afraid of judgment or sanction,” he deciphens. They also fear losing their jobs if the employer realized that his tasks can delegate to an AI. “In fact, the assets interviewed by really express the fear of being judged or devalued. 29% fears that this decreases the value of their contribution, 28% think that this does not damage their skills and 20% fear is judged by the recruiter or the hierarchical superior.

Give a formal frame to avoid risks

This is proof according to “the issue remains taboo in many companies, often due to lack of training, consciousness or a clear legal framework around the use of AI at work.”

Except that this phenomenon of “clandestine” use, also called “Shadow AI” (ghost), is not exempt from danger. The risk is to involuntarily expose private or confidential information on the Internet, with possible disastrous consequences, such as data leaks. A drift that Commercial IT services concerns.

Actually, employees are starting to use AI independently when the company is not formalized by the company. But things are changing.

“It is absolutely essential to provide employees with a formal framework to maintain control and avoid the risks of data leaks, or the risks linked to the commercial image,” concludes the specialist.

*Results based on a de facto France survey conducted in June 2025 with the Institute of Censuses. Study conducted with two samples: a sample of 1,103 French employees/researchers (503 employees surveyed, 500 unemployed respondents and 100 surveyed older than 18 years old) and a sample of 1,001 employers/recruitment manager in France.
