Rising food prices are a cause for concern for the French, whose budget is eaten up by inflation. To save money, one of the solutions would already be to open the cabinets and the fridge.
Because the French throw away on average the equivalent of 67 euros of food per month, according to a study* HelloFresh carried out by Censuswide. Specifically, “for almost a quarter of French people (respondents, editor’s note), between 26% and 50% of the products they buy end up in the trash,” says Thomas avoirte, culinary expert at HelloFresh.
A third of French people throw away leftovers
Food waste varies from household to household and can take many forms. Achats faits en trop grande quantité, mauvaise gestion et conservation des aliments, achats compulsifs, restes de repas qui terminant à la poubelle… Plus d’un tiers (36%) affirment d’ailleurs ne pas conserver les restes de leur repas pour the next.
Food waste weighs on the shopping budget of the French, as they are forced to re-purchase products thrown away. At a time when inflation is still around 6%, and even 10% on food, saving money becomes essential.
According to HelloFresh, the French food budget reaches an average of 81.73 euros per week, and half of the French spend more than 73 euros per week. A budget that also tends to increase since 34% admit to exceeding it “often”.
