The Trump administration policy again points to China. The United States government announced Thursday considering imposing customs duties in China Graphite, used for the manufacture of batteries, in order to compensate for the production support measures established by Beijing.
According to documents from the Department of Commerce, this new specific customs tax could affect around 70 Chinese companies, which will be added a 93.5% surcharge to its products.
These companies provide large groups, such as the American Tesla, the Koreans Samsung and LG or the Japanese Panasonic, for the manufacture of their batteries.
At the moment, it is a preliminary investigation, carried out by the American Committee of International Trade (ITC), after the presentation of an appeal of an association of sector producers, as well as half a dozen companies, based in five US states.
The investigation must be extended until December 5, to determine if the Chinese companies mentioned receive many subsidies from the Chinese government.
In total, this refers to almost $ 350 million in imported products in 2023, according to data from the Department of Commerce.
If they become a reality, these customs tasks would be added to 30% imposed since mid -May in all Chinese products entering the United States.
This is the second time that the US government has planned to use specific customs duties to correct what it considers anti -competitive practices in Beijing.
At the end of April, it planned to tax up to 3,521% of solar panels of Southeast Asia, again accusing interested companies, often subsidiaries of Chinese groups, of receiving subsidies from China.
The procedure in this file has not yet come to an end.
