The German government said Monday that they want to return to the increase in fiscal tickets decided by the previous coalition, strongly criticized by airlines who see a brake on their competitiveness.
“The increase in air transport tax must be canceled,” said the government coordinator in charge of tourism, Christoph Ploss, in an interview with a daily Bild, added that this question would be in the menu for discussions about the 2026 budget.
Coming from the conservative ranks of the CDU, Christoph Ploss, a member of the Coalition with SPD social democrats, also wishes to reduce German royalties of the airport, believing that the maintenance of costs too high threatens aerial ties at the beginning of Germany.
The last increase in the German tax on plane tickets entered into force in May 2024, under the government of the Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Its amount had increased to 15.53 euros (compared to 12.73 euros previously) for a short -term flight, 39.34 euros for a medium height flight and 70.83 euros (compared to 58.06eur) for long reach. The tax brought the State around 1.9 billion euros that year.
Eurowings and Ryanair threatened to reduce links
This tax also aimed to reduce the number of flights and, therefore, greenhouse gas emissions, then air transport represents from 2.5% to 3% of global CO2 emissions worldwide.
In response, two low -cost airlines, German Eurowings and Irish Ryanair, had announced in the autumn of 2024 consider eliminating numerous links to and from Germany, pointing out the taxes considered excessive.
In France, an increase in the Tax on plane tickets was registered, from 2.63 euros to 7.30 euros for a class to class to France or Europe, in the 2025 budget.
Tabarot wants to delay
But at the beginning of the month, the Minister of Transportation assured that he wanted a break in increasing prices but not abolition for this year’s increase.
“I am not in favor of the plane again because the plane has been taxed in the last two years in a quite significant way,” said Philippe Tabarot.
The minister has pointed out “a risk of abandoning” compared to other neighboring tourist countries.
