The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday, July 23, having concluded a commercial agreement with Japan, which includes a customs surcharge of 15% on average in Japanese products exported to the United States.
“We have just concluded a great commercial agreement with Japan,” Donald Trump in Truth Social Platform on Tuesday, describing him as “unprecedented.”
He also mentioned “550 billion dollars” in Japanese investments in the United States and the induced creation of “hundreds of thousands of jobs”, without giving details that are not “90% of the profits would be collected by the United States.”
Donald Trump had threatened Japan, the main source of foreign investment in the United States and depending on Washington in the army, 25%of customs duties.
“Probably more important,” according to him, Tokyo agreed to open Japan “to the trade of cars and collections, rice and a series of other agricultural products and other things.”
At the same time, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ihiba told relatives that he planned to announce his resignation shortly after an electoral debacle has deprived his government coalition of the majority in the upper chamber.
Japanese car breathes
On the Japanese side, US customs duties tax exports to the United States will be reduced to 15%, against 25% currently (and 2.5% before the return to Trump’s power), Japanese media reported Wednesday.
According to NHK Television and the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, the surcharge will be added to pre -existing customs tasks of 2.5%.
The car represented almost 30% of Japan exports last year to the United States. In the archipelago, the automotive industry represents 8% of jobs. During the night, Toyota rose to the stock market at 13.65%, Nissan by 8.97%and Honda by 10.23%.
On the contrary, steel and aluminum remain taxed at 50%.
The date of entry of new customs tasks is scheduled for August 1 with all countries, either within the framework of a commercial agreement if it occurs by then, or with the unilateral application by Washington of customs tasks sometimes very high that were initially applied in early April.
“Europe tomorrow”
In addition, during a reception with republican elected officials to mark their six months of mandate, Donald Trump said shortly after his message about the social truth that “Europe came tomorrow and, the next day, we have others that come.”
Emmanuel Macron has to go to Berlin this Wednesday, July 23 to meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz, while the end of the discussions between Washington and Brussels is coming.
France intends to convince his German partner to harden the tone against Donald Trump. “We have to change your method (…) to enter a stronger and more credible negotiation posture,” said Marc Ferracci, the Minister of Industry and Energy on Tuesday.
So far four agreements have been completed, with the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. The United States has also concluded a de -escalation agreement with China, after an increase in commercial tensions between the first two world economic powers due to the announcement of “reciprocal” customs duties.
