“I have a blind man to do”: Europa prey to “the worst harvest of fruit never known”, the price of jams will hurt

The Federation of Alerts of Food Industries (FIAC), in a study published on July 23, against the difficulties of fruit supplies at European scale. Afternoon, hail, drought frosts … Climate whims have greatly impacted this year the main production areas.

If it is a breakfast jam, you will certainly have to pay the pot more. In a study published on Wednesday, July 23, the Federation of Food Industries preserved (FIAC) sounds the emergency against “the worst fruit harvest never known” in Europe, which leads to a “general price explosion for the processed fruits sector.

Stop, late frosts, drought … The climatic whims had a great impact on the main European production areas.

“But there this year, the different thing is that almost everyone is affected. Spain, where there was rain and hail. In Greece, there was a lot of rain and frost. There was drought in Hungary, there was the drought in Serbia. In Türkiye and Bulgaria, it was Frost and the rain,” Fiac said with BFM Business.

As a result of the climatic whims that are becoming increasingly frequent, “many farmers and arcultores are seen from these cultures for the benefit of less exposed activities,” reports the Federation.

Towards a “greater dependence on extra -European imports”?

But if nothing changes in the future, “the available volumes will continue to fall, which inevitably results in a sustainable rambo of prices and a greater dependence on extractor imports,” warns the FIAC in its study.

A solution far from being desirable according to Adrien Mary: “We are forced to suck more and more. But these regions are also affected by climatic whims. And depending on the year, they will also have problems,” he explains to BFM businesses.

And for a good reason: in Serbia, for example, after 40 days without rain, the raspberry harvest was reduced by half, prices so rambified under the effect of a demand that remains sustained. The same scenario for strawberries in Poland, after the rains and frost that resulted in a 50% drop in volumes. 2025 It is also a second dark year for cherry griots: “The crops are dramatically low in Eastern Europe with losses of 30 to 80 % depending on the country. The market, already under tension, sees that prices explode in two years. To this there are additional quality problems, which allows the ruptures of the offer to the next harvest,” the FIAC warns.

Increased sugar prices

And the galleys continue. “To these difficulties in fruits an upward trend on the price of sugar is added under the effect of a fall in beet surfaces in Europe (-7 % this year),” the Federation emphasizes.
