Some 3,200 workers who gather Boeing’s combat planes in the United States began on Monday, August 4, a strike on Monday, August 4, announced their union, which denounces “promises in the air” after the previous day, a review of the contract reviewed.
“Around 3,200 highly qualified members (…) Strikes were made at midnight (on Sunday night) because too much, that is too much. This is a matter of respect and dignity,” wrote the union of IAM on Monday morning (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers), denouncing the “Boeing promises in the air.”
40% increase for four years
Interested workers work at the Missouri and Illinois factories in the center of the United States. Boeing’s initial proposal, rejected a week earlier, included an increase in salaries of 20% for four years and more license. The new offer provided a 40%increase, according to Boeing.
“The members of IAM section 837 have expressed themselves high and clear: they deserve a contract that reflects their skills, their dedication and the essential role they play in the defense of our nation,” said the day before in a statement Tom Boelling, a union representative.
Boeing “Ready to face a strike”
The union warned that if no agreement was reached within seven days, IAM section 837 could trigger a strike. “We are disappointed that our employees have rejected an offer that provided an average salary increase of 40% and resolved their main concern regarding flexible work hours,” Dan Gillian, vice president of Boeing Air Dominance and patron of the Saint-Louis site (Missouri) reacted.
Boeing is going through a deep crisis since last year due to the quality problems of its production and a strike of more than fifty days that has already paralyzed its two main factories.
IAM represents approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airlines, naval, rail, transport, health, automotive and other industries in the United States and Canada.
