The Italian competition Gendarme inflicted a fine of one million euros on Monday, August 4 on Monday, August 4, the company responsible for Shein’s websites in Europe for disseminating misleading information about the environmental efforts of the Fast Fashion Electronic Commerce Giant.
The AGCM accuses the Chinese colossus of ephemeral fashion of having “adopted a deceptive communication strategy with respect to the characteristics and environmental impact of their clothing products.”
Shein is also accused of having disseminated “deceived and/or false environmental accusations … as part of the promotion and sale of Shein brand clothes.”
Deceptive communication on recyclability
These messages were “in some cases, vague, generic and/or excessively emphatic, and in others, deceivers or omitios.” In particular, statements about the recyclability of products “have proven to be false or at least confusing at the same time,” said the competition gendarme.
Consumers could easily believe that Shein products were made exclusively from sustainable and totally recyclable materials, “an affirmation that, taking into account the fibers used and current recycling systems, does not reflect reality.”
Shein said he had “cooperated completely” with the AGCM and “took immediate measures” to respond to concerns, according to a statement achieved AFP, saying that now all environmental accusations on the website were “clear, specific and according to the regulations.”
FASS-FASHION IN THE VIEW OF ENVIRONMENTALS
Ecologists have been warning for a long time against the damage caused by the tendency to waste the ephemeral fashion sector, which produces cheap clothes that are quickly thrown.
Ephemeral fashion consumes huge amounts of water, produces hazardous chemicals and obstructs the landfills of poor countries of textile waste, while greenhouse gases are generated during production, transport and elimination.
