Ghana increases the price of cocoa production by more than 60% to support its farmers: towards an increase in global courses?

The price of cocoa established by the Ghana government was reviewed more than 62.58%on Monday, August 4.

Ghana increased the price of cocoa to production by 62.58 % to support its farmers in advance of the 2025-2026 campaign. This measure must exert pressure on the other main countries of cocoa, such as Ivory Coast.

This increase could further increase global cocoa costs, at a time when supply chains harden due to climatic shocks and aging farms.

The Minister of Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, indicated during a press conference at ACCRA that the price paid to producers would fall from $ 3,100 (almost 2,678 euros) to $ 5,040 ($ 4,353 euros) per ton.

Increase the income of cocoa producers

The second world producer behind Ivory Coast, Ghana, traditionally sets its price against its neighbor. Currently, Abidjan pays the planters up to 1,500 Franks CFA (around 2 euros) per kilo, or around $ 2,440 (2,073 euros) per ton.

This measure is part of the campaign commitments of President John Mahama, chosen last December, who promised to bring the participation of the export reversed to the producers to almost 70% of the value of the price of cocoa at the time of their export load.

The price of FOB (Franco on board) has increased in recent years, currently reaching $ 7,200 per ton, an average between contracts at $ 2,600 (2,246 euros) during the 2023-2024 season and sales forecasts for 2025-2026, said the minister.

Previously, farmers received only 63.9% of the FOB price, or $ 3,100 at a FOB value of $ 4,850 ($ 4,189) for the 2024-2025 season.

Minister Forson said that the reviewed price also takes into account the improvement of macroeconomic conditions, including the strengthening of the CEDI, the local currency and the attenuation of inflation.

Prices that have not followed the market increase

Ghana price verifications aim to stabilize farmers’ income, especially during price reductions, but criticisms say they have not followed market increases, especially in recent years, when prices have increased considerably.

In response, some farmers have embarked on the extraction of gold, assigning their lands to informal minors, many of which have left sustainable pollution behind.

The Minister of Finance has also announced the reintroduction of the government of the Freesty Distribution Government for Cocoa, which includes the distribution of fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, sprayers and floral inductors to increase yields and income.
