Before 15% in August, electricity prices have reached their highest level since March

The increase in temperatures makes demand in electricity, linked to air conditioning equipment. It also results in the price increase, in the highest since March.

Temperatures increase and electricity prices too. According to the data compiled by Bloomberg And exe, electricity prices in France have increased by 15% since the beginning of August and reach 60 euros per MWH, the highest level since March.

While temperatures should reach 38 ° in southern France this week, EDF warned at the end of July, possible cuts in the Rhône Valley, says Bloomberg. Cited by BloombergFlorence Schmit, a Rabobank analyst, says that these ads “revive concerns towards the end of the month and as September.” The electric company has not yet announced cuts specifically linked to heat for this week.

Consequences of climate change, heat waves are more frequent and more important, testing electricity supply capacities, while demand increases due to air conditioning equipment.

A reactor of the Gipfech energy plant stopped temporarily at the end of June

At the end of June, the consumption of French electricity had already increased sharply compared to the beginning of the summer of 2024 on the occasion of an abrasing episode that touched almost all hexagon. The phenomenon is not completely due to a greater attraction for air conditioning or fans to cool off, but can also be explained by the highest electricity needs linked to the industry or the tertiary compared to last year. According to the International Energy Agency, the air conditioning is one of the engines of the growth of the demand for electricity worldwide due to the multiplication of heat waves. In France, the equipment rate of individuals in air conditioning increases, to 25% in 2020, according to the latest Ademe figures.

On the production side, the last heat wave had forced EDF to stop reactor 1 of the Nuclear Energy Plant of Gangfech (TARN-ET-GARONNE).

The energy plant drinks water from the Garonne to guarantee in particular the cooling of its production units before returning it “largely from the river to a slightly higher temperature (+0.2 ° C on average),” the group added. Therefore, this device must be suspended, through a stop of the site activity, in case of too high river water.
