“We cannot fight”: Europe is attacking Chinese corn boxes whose imports have increased by more than 750% in 5 years

Brussels will soon impose high anti -dumping rights to Chinese sweet corn exporters, while the European sector deplies unfair competition.

The European Union places the arrivals of the “Chinese corn”. In the hope of protecting European producers and processors from greater competence, and being considered unfair, climbing the anti -submersed rights up to 55% will be imposed in a few days to Chinese exports of sweet corn to the European territory. More specifically, it is the variety of corn destined for human consumption, it is usually sold in the form of boxes or canned in supermarkets.

Directed by the European Commission, an Anti -Memrgence survey has been open since December to sweet corn exports by China, after a complaint filed by the European Association of Sweet Corn Processors (AETMD). EU companies have the possibility to take advantage of the European Commission if they are considered injured by spilling practices, that is, when a product is sold at an artificially low price by foreign companies in the European market, less than the “normal value” of said product.

For the European Executive, the discharge seems proven: after several months of questionnaires and verifications, Brussels has written a list of Chinese exporters that will be imposed on anti -sourtgios on Friday, August 8, 2025. These anti -sumergios rights will be equivalent to 48.9% for “cooperative exporters” and 55.2% for others, while one of them lower 37.5%, according to European documents by “cooperative exporters”. Calculated on the price of goods on the border, before the application of customs tariffs.

At the moment, these anti -umergence measures remain temporary: the investigation will continue until February 2026, where a final decision is expected. If Brussels decides to support these anti -sifle measures, they will remain in force for five years.

“Very good news”

The decision made by Brussels to impose provisional anti -dumping rights is “very good news”, welcomes Adrien Mary, general secretary of AETMD, with BFM businesses. “We discovered from 2021 that China sent significant amounts of soft corn at very low prices, against which we cannot fight,” he said, saying that Chinese exporters had begun to “take market share” in several European countries.

Arrivals have accelerated sharply in recent years at the entrance to Europe: just under 5,000 tons of soft corn* have sent China to the European Union in 2019, against a little more than 42,000 tons five years later, according to the data provided by Eurostat. Or more than 750% increase. In 2023, the 50,000 -year -old bar had crossed. “The annual European production of sweet corn turns, large ways, around 500,000 tons,” says Adrien Mary as a comparison.

In fact, French consumers have very few chances of storing these preserves of corn in their cabinets. Chinese production is absent from the supermarkets in France, where strong brands reign (among others, Géant Vart, Bonduelle, D’Aucy) and the brands of distributors that are part of France, a global heavyweight of sweet corn that exports much more than it consumes. However, other neighbors, including Germany and Eastern European countries, have been more sensitive to Chinese exports.

To protect its own industry, the EU has already imposed the anti -sumergios rights to the imports of sweet corn from Thailand, another world giant since 2007.

*These figures refer to soft corn in grains, prepared or maintained in addition to vinegar or acetic acid and not frozen, according to the Eurostat classification.
