Energy sobriety: 72% of the French are in favor of turning off public lighting after 10 p.m.

Citizens and local elected officials are increasingly inclined to introduce measures for greater energy sobriety. This is the finding of the survey carried out by the CSA Research Institute for Enedis.

While the Fair of Mayors and Local Authorities (SMCL) takes place from November 22 to 24 at the Porte de Versailles in Paris, the issue of energy sobriety in the territories is on the table. According to the survey published by the CSA Research Institute for Enedis, it has become a priority for the mayors of the municipalities. 89% consider that the implementation of energy sobriety measures is an important objective. With the exception of Île-de-France, which rather highlights the issue of public transport. As for citizens, the issue is now in fourth position. 88% believe it should be an important goal for their mayor.

Multiplication of measures

Several measures are proposed both by local elected officials and by the public: the extinction of public lighting after 10 p.m. is one of them. 72% of the French are in favor. As for the mayors, 68% have already implemented this measure. The renovation of energy-intensive homes is also demanded by 86% of residents since 33% say they live in a thermal sieve. 28% of mayors have already responded positively.

Most municipalities choose to start with measures related to public lighting and heating. 47% have already implemented actions. An initiative that does not displease the majority of the French. 72% are in favor of reducing heating in public buildings.

Request for support from mayors

Although many municipalities have already implemented measures at their level, 60% of the mayors are asking for more support to diagnose and define the actions to be implemented. For cities with 2,000 to 10,000 inhabitants, this figure rises to 76%. When initiatives are implemented, 67% request tools to measure their impact.

* Quantitative study carried out between September 27 and October 19, 2022 with 1,012 French people and 500 mayors, representative of French municipalities (size and region).
