This is the fall of American tourism: many vacationers have decided to launch the United States this year, postponed by Donald Trump’s policy. According to the latest figures published by the National Travel and Tourism Office (American Tourism and Travel Office), the number of foreign tourists who came to visit the United States further fell 3.1% in July (compared to July 2024).
Especially because this statistic does not include Canada or Mexico. However, the Canadians boycotted the United States since Donald Trump threatened to make his country the 51st American state. In May (the latest statistics available), the number of Canadian tourists fell a quarter (-25.6% compared to May 2024).
Unlike the Germans, the French continue to visit the United States
Last May, a study by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) that brings together the main world tourism operators, warned about possible losses of $ 12.5 billion in expenses in international visitors this year for the US tourism sector. But the airlines were reassuring and still did not observe the effects of Trump’s policy on reserves.
Two months later, it is clear that the trend is quite descending, even if it is still moderate. Tourist arrivals from Western Europe are decreasing 4% in July for a year. German visitors have particularly rejected the United States (-15%), however, the effect is not obvious in the French (-0.2%).
A Trump offensive policy with respect to other countries
Reinforced border controls, cases of tourist media selected at airports, announces an increase in the price of visas next year, anti -immigrant measures and against foreign students, aggressive discourses and customs tasks … Donald Trump has multiplied offensives with respect to almost all countries of the world or their nationals. Diplomatic relations with China were so tense that in April, Beijing called his nationals to “prudence” in the face of the “risks” of a trip to the United States. As a result, Chinese tourist arrivals melted almost 14% in July. On the other hand, the United States continues to have the side of tourists from Central America (+11.8% outside of Mexico).
