“The situation cannot stop there.” In X, the Minister of Agriculture Annie Ginevard reacted, on Thursday, August 21, at night, to the announcement made by the European Commissioner Maros Sefcovic that the European Union had “failed” in obtaining the exemption of customs tasks of wines and spirits.
The minister “deplores the result of the negotiation between the EU and the United States on the trade of agricultural products” and believes that the agreement concluded that it is “unbalanced” and “undermines the French and European interests in agricultural matters.”
“I regret the lack of exemption for wines and spirits, although France and other countries have emphasized the priority importance of these products,” said the Minister of Agriculture, adds that “the situation cannot stop there.”
“Support producers” of European wines
“I urge European negotiators who make a priority of the next exchanges they will have with the US authorities, in the coming weeks and months. I am also waiting for strong European measures to support producers who would be penalized by this unacceptable result,” he said.
Early in the day, Laurent Saint-Martin, the Delegate Minister of Foreign Trade, had also made a statement in the same direction, ensuring that “history has not ended” regarding the tasks of US customs in wines and spirits. “The agreement leaves open additional exemptions, we will work there,” he said.
