The American aeronautical manufacturer Boeing is in conversations with the Chinese authorities about an order that can reach up to 500 aircraft, writes the Bloomberg news agency on Thursday, citing sources close to the unidentified file.
Contacted, Boeing said “Do not comment on speculation.” However, the news agency emphasizes that the contract “can still have an abortion”, in the context of the commercial war initiated by Washington with everyone, especially China. Following this publication, the group’s action increased to almost 3.7% in commerce before the opening of the New York Stock Exchange.
Last contract in 2017
The last contract won by Boeing with the Chinese authorities dates back to 2017, during a visit to Beijing of President Donald Trump during his first term, and led to 300 airplanes (single and dodged) for an estimated value of $ 37 billion at the time. The manufacturer has received only thirty gross orders since January 2018, the last date of 2023, Chinese airlines and lease companies: 27 for large 777 carriers in FRET version and three for Monocourloir 737 Max, according to its website.
China was the last country to resume Boeing deliveries in December 2023, after the accident of two 737 Max 8 on October 2018 and March 2019, which left 346 dead in total. They were suspended for a few weeks in May-June of 2024 after the Chinese Civil Aviation Agency (CAAC) requested an additional approval on a lithium battery installed in a 737 flight recorder, 787 Dreamliner and the new 777x program.
Commercial War
The manufacturer, the largest American exporter, had been penalized by Beijing in retaliation for customs duties announced by Donald Trump about its imports to the United States. Chinese companies then refuse to receive ordered Boeing devices. But after a 90 -day suspension agreement with the respective surcharges, Beijing has again authorized Chinese airlines to receive and order Boeing.
The US president is working to get into the bilateral commercial agreements of the orders for Boeing. In its latest annual report on the perspectives of commercial aviation at the age of twenty, published in June, Boeing estimated at 43,600 the number of new airplanes that will be manufactured in 2044 in the world, including 21% to meet demand in China. The Chinese manufacturer Comac does not produce, at this stage, enough to feed the Chinese market.
Airbus eliminated?
This mega-control potential could penalize Airbus ambitions in China. “We observed that before the Bourget Fair, it had been reported that China planned to order around 300 Airbus, Single-Off and Counseers devices, but this order did not materialize. We had raised a hypothesis of an order of more than 100 A330neo, because it had mentioned as a potential command before the Parnborough 2024 Makedake,” Jefferies explains.
