“Insufficient volumes and savings”: Porsche renounces its own batteries

The German manufacturer launches the towel while the European electric battery industry is going through an existential crisis.

The German sports car manufacturer that Porsche announced on Monday, August 25 his decision to give up producing his own batteries for his electric vehicles, a new blow to European efforts in the field of electric cars.

This decision illustrates the difficulties found by European companies to impose themselves on Chinese battery giants for electric vehicles, such as Catl.

“However, electromobility will continue to be an essential mode of propulsion in the future for our sports cars,” said Oliver Blume.

200 layoffs

The trial of this production must lead to the dismissal of 200 of the 286 Cellforce Factory employees, a Porsche subsidiary specialized in the development and production of high -performance lithium ion batteries, reported a representative of the Mall Union of IG last week.

Some of these employees can find a job in Powerco, a subsidiary of the parent company, Porsche said Monday in his press release.

Celforce will now focus on its research and development activity for battery cells.

Difficult context for industry

Porsche’s decision was announced just three years after the launch of the Cellforce pilot site in Krhentellinsfurt, near Stuttgart (Southwest), which had benefited from 60 million euros in public aid, according to the Daily Handelsblat Economic.

Initially, the factory had to reach a production equivalent to 1 GWh per year, a storage capacity required to drive 10,000 vehicles each year.

This Porsche setback occurs in a difficult context for the European battery industry for electric vehicles. The Swedish Group Northvolt, manufacturer of these most prominent batteries in Europe, has declared bankruptcy in March, and its assets are largely assumed by its American competitor Lyten.
