To satisfy Donald Trump, Mexico plans to increase its own customs rights against Chinese products

According to Bloomberg, the Mexican government is preparing an increase in customs barriers against Chinese products to protect national companies, but also to satisfy a Donald Trump request.

Under American pressure, Mexico plans to raise customs barriers against China. As part of the 2026 budget, the Mexican government plans to increase customs tariffs in China products, to protect its own Chinese import companies and meet Donald Trump’s tenacious demand, reports the US Bloomberg financial means.

According to the Mexican government project, these rates increases would have as its objective to support Mexican manufacturers against subsidized Chinese production and, therefore, cheaper, especially in the automotive, textile and plastic sectors, Bloomberg advances, citing anonymous sources close to the file. Given the decline of the US market, devils for the customs duties of Donald Trump, Chinese exports have clearly increased to Latin America.

For Mexico City, it is also a matter of appearing to Donald Trump. Since his return to the White House, the US president and his administration have continued to claim Mexican authorities with the strengthening of customs duties in Chinese products, following US protectionist measures. The two countries are also preparing to renegotiate their tripartite free trade agreement soon with Canada, negotiated under Donald Trump’s first mandate.

Draft budget 2026

At the moment, this recovery of Mexican customs barriers against China is not definitely frozen and could still evolve, according to the sources cited by Bloomberg. The 2026 budget project led by the Mexican government, where these possible customs measures are found, will be presented at the Mexican Congress before September 8 and will require its green light. But President Claudia Sheinbaum’s party has the majority there, giving her a good space for the maneuver.

Mexico City has obtained a 90 -day postponement until the end of October, for the taxes of US customs tasks in 30%, while the South American country is already suffering a surcharge against the automotive and steel sectors.
