Brazil plans to impose reciprocal customs duties in the United States in response to the surcharge of many Brazilian products, AFP learned from a government source on Thursday.
President Luiz Inacio Da Silva authorized an internal study on a possible response to the 50% surcharge imposed by Donald Trump, indicated.
The Foreign Chamber of Commerce, even in particular the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, must determine within 30 days if these surcharges fall under a law on reciprocity adopted in April.
In this case, a group of experts will develop “countermedidal criminals”, which could include reciprocal customs duties, explained a source, which required anonymity, not be authorized to express themselves.
But “the door remains open to diplomatic consultations,” said the source, added that the Brazilian government should officially inform the United States of this process on Friday.
“I hope this accelerates dialogue and negotiation,” confirmed vice president Geraldo Alckmin before the day.
The United States has a commercial surplus with Brazil
Relations between the United States and Brazil have stagnated since the entry into force of the American surcharge on August 6.
Brazil confiscated the World Trade Organization (WTO) in early August.
Unlike most other countries that have been attributed to Washington Customs, the United States has a commercial surplus with Brazil. The country imports mainly engines and machines, as well as fuels.
The Trump administration has advanced a political argument to justify the surcharge: the procedure initiated against former Brazilian extreme president Jair Bolsonaro, judged for alleged attempted coup and assigned to House, a procedure that Washington assimilates to a “witch hunt.”
According to the residence while waiting for the verdict, Jair Bolsonaro faces more than 40 years in prison if he is convicted.
