One euro per day and per person. It was the very affordable price of the Viennese public transport network for 13 years. But the Austrian capital will leave this rate from January 1, 2026 to preserve its public finances, as Bloomberg reports.
The annual subscription ranges from 365 euros to 461 euros. The municipality has argued, explaining that by taking into account inflation for 13 years, the price should have been 502 euros.
Despite this increase, Vienne remains one of the capitals where public transport is the cheapest. London will always be 8 times more expensive than the Austrian city.
And the annual subscription will not be the only one. The unique trip ranges from 2.40 to 3.20 euros, the card for the day increases from 8 to 10.20 euros, the 7 -day monthly pass increases from 19.70 to 28.90 euros and finally the monthly subscription ranges from 51 to 75 euros.
“190 kilometers of additional lines”
The Social Democratic municipality also decided that in the future, prices would increase every year, which was not the case before. The community justified this decision for the budgetary situation but also the extension of the network.
“Although public transport prices have been constantly low since 2012, the offer has developed strongly,” said Ulli Sima’s planning, with the media of Austria Wien.orf.
Almost 1.3 million will, or around 65 % of the city’s population, had an annual pass last year, including student transport titles, compared to around 768,000 in 2012.
