Spacex Space Company, the property of Elon Musk, has bought $ 17 billion in the American operator Echostar for $ 17 billion in strengthening their operations of the Starlink Network, the two groups announced in a statement on Monday, September 8.
With this operation, Spacex says he wants to develop direct access from a smartphone to certain satellites of his constellation Starlink, without an additional dedicated terminal (“direct to the cell”).
Spacex launched its first satellites in early 2024 capable of guaranteeing communications directly on compatible smartphones. It now has 600, of the 8,000 orbit satellites of the company.

In addition to the SMS and alert messages, the clients of the “Direct To Cell” network of Starlink now have access to applications, social networks and messaging platforms in remote areas, it also argues the company Elon Musk on its website.
To offer these services, the American group has been associated with ten operators, present in North and South America, Australia, Japan, as well as in Switzerland and Ukraine.
“More than 50% of the planet remains covered with land services,” Spacex recalls in place, saying that remaining “committed to working with mobile networks on a global scale.”
The transaction announced plans on Monday to give access to the service to some of the Costar customers, said the joint press release of the two companies. In electronic exchanges before the opening of the New York Stock Exchange, around 12 noon GMT, the title of Echostar won $ 22%.
