The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said, on Tuesday, September 16, having argued with US President Donald Trump, additional steps to strengthen the sanctions against Russia, to end the war in Ukraine.
“I had a good decision with (Donald Trump) about the strengthening of our common efforts to increase economic pressure on Russia thanks to additional measures,” he said about X.
He indicated that the European Executive would soon submit its proposals for a 19 Package of sanctions of the European Union against Russia since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
A 19th package of sanctions against Russia in preparation
This new sanctions package will include measures aimed at cryptocurrencies, banks and energy, he said.
Donald Trump demanded that his allies stop buying Russian oil before taking punitive measures against Moscow, and asked them to impose customs duties to China.
The European Union has already banned most of the imports of Russian oil, reducing the participation of oil that imports from Russia by 29% at the beginning of 2021 to 2% in mid -2010. He plans to finish it completely and has announced a plan aimed at gradually suppressing all the purchases of Russian oil and gas at the end of 2027. Ursula von Der Leyen said Brussels sought to go even faster.
“The Russian war economy, supported by the income of fossil fuels, finances the bloodbath in Ukraine. To finish it, the commission will propose to accelerate the progressive abolition of imports of Russian fossil fuels,” he added.
