Trump asked Europe to sanction India to buy Russian oil: the EU that negotiates with New Delhi seems to want to follow the US mandate

While Brussels has been negotiating a commercial agreement with India for months, the head of the EU diplomacy said that New Delhi buys Russian oil was “obstacles to cooperation.” A change that follows a request in this sense of US President last week.

The purchases of Russian Oil India and the participation of New Delhi in a military exercise organized by Moscow could damage the strengthening of their links with the European Union, the EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas on Wednesday warned. Before journalists in Brussels, he informed that he mentioned these issues with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India, adding:

New Delhi and the European bloc are making discussions in order to trade and defense agreements. The two partners have potentially decisive trade negotiations in the Indian capital this week, trying to resolve divergences in agriculture, dairy products and barriers without problems to respect the ambitious term for the end of the year for an agreement, said sources of the Indian government and the EU.

The negotiations, relaunched in 2022, have accelerated since the re -election of Donald Trump. Given the customs duties of the US President, the EU has also accelerated its efforts to conclude commercial alliances, sealing agreements with Mexico and the South American countries of Mercosur and intensifying discussions with India, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates.

Trump has been briefly connected to a meeting

But last week, the US president asked European officials to impose customs prices up to 100% against Russian oil buyers, such as India and China. Despite negotiations with New Delhi, Europe seems ready to follow the recommendations of the US President. Donald Trump was briefly connected last Wednesday to a meeting between US and European officials on the issue to push Brussels to accept these customs rights from 50 to 100% directed to China and India, the two main clients for Russian oil, according to the same source.

The United States Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Besent, received a European delegation on Monday and Tuesday, in particular the “sanctions of Mr.”, David O’Sullivan, with the desire to “take strong measures against Russia,” he said in X. Washington pressures to use customs tasks directed to Russian oil buyers. The United States has already done it against India and wishes to apply it to China.

According to a study published in June by the Pure Energy and Air Research Center (CREA), with Helsinki headquarters (Finland), China, India and Türkiye are the main clients of Russian hydrocarbons. The EU has ceased any importation of Russian oil after the invasion of Ukraine. However, two countries, Slovakia and Hungary, have been exempt from their high dependence on Russian oil.
