One in four Europeans is afraid by plane: What are the airports of the continent that improves anxiety?

These airports are not dangerous, but expose passengers more frequently to stressful situations.

If you are afraid by plane, you may have to avoid these airports. Airadvisor, an online platform dedicated to the protection of the rights of Air passengers, has just published the classification of the ten European airports that generate anxiety for passengers. These airports are not dangerous, but expose passengers more frequently to stressful situations due to more turbulence, gas discounts, spectacular approaches or steep descents, short clues …

To establish this classification, the site was based on its “pure” house index (passengers united and exposure to the real world) presented as “independent.” “The model attributes to each airport a note from 0 to 100, depending on seven families of stressful factors perceptible by passengers, each weighted according to their relative importance,” explains Airadvisor.

Here is the list of European airports that produce more anxiety:

  • Funchal/Madeira (Portugal) – 88/100
  • Gibraltar (British territory abroad) -84/100
  • Innsbruck (Austria) – 83/100
  • London -City (United Kingdom) -81/100
  • Vágar/Feroid Islands (Denmark) – 79/100
  • Kefefavík (Iceland) – 76/100
  • Skiathos (Greece) – 75/100
  • Santorini (Greece) – 72/100
  • Mykonos (Greece) – 70/100
  • Tenerife North (Spain, Canary Islands) – 68/100

Island airports at the top of the ranking

As Airadvisor points out, “the island’s airports dominate the ranking, from Madeira and Gibraltar to the Greek and Tenerife Islands. Their situation next to the sea makes them particularly exposed to the winds of the crossing and seasonal bursts, while the surrounding cliffs and short clues reinforce the intensity of the experience of the passengers.”

“Madeira is no more dangerous than other airports,” explains Jean Serrat, aeronautical consultant for BFMTV, “but has certain peculiarities”: geography and wind episodes. It is one of the airports where the pilot must have trained during a flight on the site with an instructor or with a simulator.

“Finally, unusual tracks are distinguished as an amplifier amplifier. Madeira’s track perched on concrete pillars on the ocean, that of Skiathos that ends just after a public road and a beach, and the particularly steep descent of the city of London creates very spectacular visuals that make the units to the passengers.” While some airports are distinguished, the platform recalls that these stressors are common in aeronautics, while sometimes they are perceived as danger signs.

The weather is a growing factor

“Gas discounts (when pilots interrupt a landing and try their focus again) occur approximately once a day at a large European airport. During bad weather, this figure can increase to dozens and, however, each of them is a well -controlled standard maneuver,” he explains.

“The weather is also a growing factor: Eurocontrol data shows that in 2024, almost 25% of all flight delays in Europe were caused by unfavorable climatic conditions. For nerve passengers, this results in more waiting circuits, route and driving descents, all perfectly safe, but often stressful,” you can read.

“Knowing that some turbulence, gas gases or climatic delays are frequent in certain airports, makes it possible to perceive them as normal aviation aspects, and not as worrisome signs,” says Anton Radchenko, Airadvisor CEO that recalls that the fear of the plane affects approximately 1 European of 4, of which approximately 10% feel severe anxiety when he goes up to the board.
