The German Minister of the Interior pointed out on Thursday that Germany and Europe were in an “arms race” with respect to drones, once again pulling the alarm against the growth of the Russian threat.
Germany, like other European states, has seen drone flights above the critical infrastructure multiply, without always being able to identify the authors.
He assured that Germany was strengthening its “ability to action through the development of defense against drones”, pointing out recent incidents in Denmark, Norway in Romania or even in Poland.
“We are involved in an arms race between the threat that represented the drones and the means to counteract them. That is why we will intensify our investments in this race, both for the development of a new law on air security and by financial means, according to the principle: detect, neutralize, intercept.”
Berlin accuses Russia of multiplying sabotage, espionage, surveillance and destabilization operations, particularly using drones.
Western delay
But until now the German authorities have been recalcitrant to demolish unidentified devices that fly on military or infrastructure bases, fear that debris causes damage or victims.
The arms race in the field of attack drones and the means of defense is now a central element of the conflict in Ukraine, where Russians and Ukrainians constantly innovate in an attempt to take advantage of the other, more than three years after the Russian invasion on a large scale.
Western countries seek to catch up, such as NATO countries in Russia who wish to build an “anti-rone wall”, a set of technological and military solutions to counteract these devices.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced, about his power in power in spring, an ambitious resettlement plan to counteract Russian threat.
The German army also launched three days of maneuvers in Hamburg, a large port city in northern Germany.
The scenario foresees the deployment of NATO troops due to a military escalation at the borders of the Baltic countries, neighboring states of Russia.
