Drones to counteract other drones. The EU countries will discuss the proposals for the first time on Friday to erect a “wall” of Anti-Drone defenses for the block, elaborate in a hurry after several aerial incursions in Russia.
Drones flights on airports in Denmark also heat the old continent under pressure.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke of the idea of a “European drone wall” the first during a speech in mid -September.
The head of the European Executive declared himself in favor of a “developed, deployed and maintained European capacity, reactive in real time.”
The commissioner responsible for defense problems, Andrius Kubilius, will try to deepen these proposals during a videoconference on Friday with a dozen EU member states. The countries in question are mostly near Russia, although Denmark has been added to the list after repeated outstanding drones originally unidentified.
Ukraine, which has developed a complete series of capacities to detect and knock down Russian drones at a lower cost, will also be there.
A concept with still bay contours
What way will this “wall” take? European officials requested on the subject admits that details about this initiative are still very lazy.
According to them, the early stages should probably consist of deploying more sensors along the long border than EU actions with Russia.
The development of an integrated system capable of shooting drones would probably take much longer, they added.
NATO’s response to Russian drone incurred in Poland, highlighted the gaps in the arsenal of the alliance against this threat. To tear down these twenty drones, the alliance had to mobilize expensive missiles.
This “drone wall” is part of a broader effort in Europe to build its defense abilities in the face of Russian threat.
Many initiatives examined at a summit between heads of state next week in Copenhagen.
