The child care market wants to “have a fashionable baby again,” in the face of the decrease in the birth rate in France, and asks public authorities to an “ambitious family policy,” manufacturers and retail ones begged on Monday, during a press conference.
“It is important that having a baby again to be fashionable,” said Olivier Marin, vice president of child care of the Federation of Specialized Stores in Toys and Products for Children (FCJPE), while the child care market lost 5.2% in value and 7.3% in volume between 2024 and June 2025, compared to the previous year, according to this Federation.
The merchants and manufacturers held a common press conference on the occasion of the largest professional fair in the sector, the Bébé Paris Lounge, which is held on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The sector “offers concrete measures to public authorities. Therefore, we ask for an ambitious family policy, more nurseries, housing, elongated license, help for children’s guards,” said Olivier Rigal, vice president of the French Federation of Child Care Toys Industries (FFJP), which unites manufacturers.
An annual decrease of 5%
In the shortest term, the Federation has presented “proposals to our elected officials.” On the one hand, “VAT lower than 20 to 5.5% in essential security products for babies”; On the other hand, “allow the release of employee savings (…) of the first child”, and not of the 3rd as is the case today.
The year 2025 is expected to mark a new minor in the number of births since the end of World War II, for the fourth consecutive year, according to Insee. Births have decreased every year since 2011, with the exception of 2021.
“The first challenge we have to face, (…) is the birth rate,” insisted Olivier Rigal.
“The multiculture sector, in the broad sense, with manufacturers, must be absolutely a force for proposals and an important couple for the State, to revalue the birth rate and support families,” Olivier Marin hammered.
The FCJPE also offers “a birthday impulse, which would be an envelope dedicated to the team, (…) usable in specialized distribution,” said Olivier Marin.
