Daniel EK, Swedish founder of the Spotify online music platform, will leave his position as general director to become executive president of January 2026, leaving his place to a tandem, announced the transmission giant on Tuesday.
Alex Norström, commercial director, and Gustav Söderström, director of products and technology, will assume and share the position of managing director, said Spotify in a press release.
“This change simply corresponds to the way we have already operated. As an executive president, I will focus on the long -term development of society,” said Daniel EK.
In the New York Stock Exchange, where the Swedish group is listed, Spotify’s action fell 3.8% in exchanges prior to openings.
Spotify has more than 700 million users, said Daniel EK. The group registered its first annual net gain in 2024, to 1,100 million euros.
Balf, bearded and dressed in a relaxed way, usually with sneakers, shirt and jacket, the Swedes, known by their reserved style and pragmatism, said he would continue playing a main role in Spotify.
“As executive president, I will focus on the long -term trajectory of the company and ensure, for my participation, maintain a close link between the Board of Directors and our general co -directors,” he promised.
It was in 2006 that the Swede, after having made a fortune selling software to an online advertising company, Spotify created with its partner Martin Lorentzon. The legend says that after a weekend locked in EK watching the movie The Godfather and listening to music in iTunes that the two men have the idea of creating an iTunes with all the songs of the world without download.
Listening to music online looked like Far West.
