Almost five million less visitors in one year: at full closure, the United States is concerned with the decrease in the number of international tourists

At the same time, the United States Travel Association is betting on the next important events in the country to reverse the trend.

Customs duties, internal policy led by Donald Trump, reinforced border controls, cost of living … As we know, international tourists live a bit to the United States. According to the US Travel Association, Lobby, which brings together airlines, hotels and tour operators, “international arrivals must go from 72.4 million in 2024 to 67.9 million in 2025, the first decrease from 2020”.

In July, the number of foreign tourists who came to visit the United States fell 3.1% (compared to July 2024). Last May, a study by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) that brings together the main world tourism operators, warned about possible losses of $ 12.5 billion in expenses in international visitors this year for the US tourism sector.

Decrease in the number of Chinese tourists

The very sensitive decrease in the number of Chinese tourists feeds this concern. Diplomatic relations with the Asian giant were so tense that last April, Beijing called his nationals to “prudence” in the face of the “risks” of a trip to the United States. As a result, Chinese tourist arrivals melted almost 14% in July.

Another negative factor: the “closure”, the budget paralysis that currently attacks the country and has serious consequences in a very important national tourism throughout the Atlantic.

At the same time, the United States Travel Association is focusing on the next important events, such as the next World Football Cup and the 250th Anniversary of the United States to reverse the trend.

But for professionals, the sector must evolve. “The next decade can be extraordinary growth, but only if we act decisively,” they said. “The United States must show the path modernizing travel infrastructure, simplifying entry processes and sending a clear message: the United States is open to business.” Tourism is a strategic sector for the country, since it generates no less than $ 2,900 billion in activity and almost one in ten direct and indirect.
