Emmanuel Macron praised on Monday the “French pride” and “global inspiration” represented, according to him, by Philippe Aghion, who was one of the three people awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economics.
“Congratulations to Philippe Aghion, Bank of Sweden prizewinner in economic sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel. Through his vision of growth through innovation, he illuminates the future and demonstrates that French thought continues to illuminate the world. French pride, global inspiration,” wrote the Head of State in X about who was one of his economic advisors.
Emmanuel Macron decorated Philippe Aghion with the title of Officer of the National Order of Merit on Monday, October 6, a few hours after the surprise resignation of Sébastien Lecornu. The Collège de France professor was also close to Emmanuel Macron, whose economic program he inspired in 2017 on reviving growth.
He met him in 2007, during the Commission for the Liberation of Growth, chaired by Jacques Attali, when the president was a young finance inspector. The two men joined the team in charge of future president François Hollande’s economic program in 2011. Philippe Aghion has not expressed (or at least not as much) his support for the president in 2022.
In a recent interview with the newspaper Le Monde, the economist recommended investing in the educational system and directing individual savings more towards risk, in order to create a more effective financing system for innovation. Like many economists, he is also pushing for the recommendations of Mario Draghi, former president of the European Central Bank, to be implemented.
