A 455 million euro contract: the German Siemens Mobility will supply trains to the longest metro line in France

Alstom’s German competitor will supply 57 new automatic meters for line 2 of the Lille metropolitan area, the longest line in France (31 kilometers).

In the industrial and commercial war between the French Alstom and Siemens Mobility in the field of rail transport, the German giant has just scored some good points in France.

In fact, the conglomerate has been chosen again by the metropolis of Lille for its automatic metro. Siemens will supply 57 new automatic meters for line 2 of the conurbation, the longest line in France with 31 kilometers for 44 stations, eight communities crossed and 67 million passengers per year. They will be delivered from the end of 2028. Contract amount: 445 million euros.

In Paris too

These meters will replace the trains supplied by the German group since 1989. “By moving to the VAL208 NG3, the European metropolis of Lille (MEL) reaffirms its desire to modernize its network and offer its residents more capable, reliable, sustainable and efficient transport. The design and management of this new project will be carried out by our French teams, in Toulouse and Lille,” he explains. “About 55% of the activities will be carried out in France,” adds Alexandre Quéméneur, president of Siemens Mobility France.

Siemens Mobility also secured a large contract at the beginning of the year, this time with RATP in Paris for the supply of on-board and radio automation for the new train control system on line 12. The contract includes a 30-year maintenance option. The amount was not communicated. It is part of the modernization of line 12 with the arrival of the new MF19 rolling stock manufactured by Alstom to replace the trains that date back to the 1960s. These trains also begin to circulate on line 10.
