Military equipment for Ukraine… paid for with Russian money: this is the proposal of the European Commission to the EU ambassadors, reports the Financial times. The European Union has reportedly proposed using part of a €140 billion loan secured by Russia’s frozen assets to purchase American weapons that would be transferred to the Ukrainian armed forces. And this, on the condition that the Trump administration continues to support Ukraine.
Despite a “European preference,” the Commission is considering cooperation with “international partners who commit to providing substantial additional support” to Ukraine, according to the Financial Times. The document consulted by the British newspaper plans to use most of the funds for the purchase of weapons, but also to support the Ukrainian and European defense industry. To finance the purchases, the European Commission plans to use fixed assets from Euroclear, a Belgian liquidation company. According The EchoesThis decision will be examined by the 27 EU countries on October 23, during the European Council.
Ensure American support
This decision comes as Donald Trump’s decisions to meet again with Vladimir Putin and not launch Tomahawk missiles took European allies by surprise. The “give and take” objective of this measure would be to ensure that the United States does not stop supporting the Ukrainian government against Russia.
In recent months, Donald Trump has said he is in favor of European countries (and Canada) acquiring American equipment to provide to the Ukrainian military; Countries such as Germany and the Netherlands have recently announced orders for Patriot missile defense systems, to then transfer them to Ukraine.
