“We have strong immunity against restrictions”: Moscow drops US sanctions against two Russian oil giants

Russia, unimpressed by the US sanctions on two oil giants, shows its confidence and evokes measures whose results could be “disastrous”.

She is not impressed. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman on Thursday denounced US sanctions against oil groups Rosneft and Lukoil, stating that Russia is “immune” to these economic pressures.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called the sanctions imposed against the two Russian oil giants, Lukoil, “huge” in the hope that Moscow will end the war in Ukraine that began in February 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed a “very important step.”

“If the current US administration begins to follow the example of its predecessors (…), the result will be equally disastrous from the point of view of domestic (US) politics and negative for the stability of the world economy,” commented Maria Zajárova.

“An act of war against Russia”

Donald Trump, who for many months refused to decide on these sanctions, estimated that his talks with the Russian president were “going nowhere”, a day after the indefinite postponement of a planned meeting between the two in Budapest. The US president, who met face-to-face with Vladimir Putin in mid-August in Alaska, confirmed on Wednesday that no further meetings with his Russian counterpart will be held for the time being.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, accustomed to virulent messages on social media, estimated that the United States was now on the path to war with Russia. “The decisions made are an act of war against Russia. Trump has now fully aligned himself with crazy Europe,” he wrote on Telegram.
