Amazon is preparing to cut 30,000 jobs in its support functions starting Tuesday, three sources familiar with the project learned, as the American giant strives to reduce its expenses while offsetting excessive hiring made during the pandemic.
This figure represents a small percentage of Amazon’s 1.55 million employees, but represents almost 10% of the 350,000 employees in its support functions. This is the largest workforce reduction at Amazon since it eliminated 27,000 jobs in 2022. An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment.
HR, devices and services, operations
Amazon has made workforce reductions in several sectors over the past two years. According to sources, the departures planned for this week could especially affect the human resources, devices and services and operations sectors.
The managers of the affected branches received training on Monday to learn how to communicate the news to their teams, the sources also indicated, specifying that the first announcements of layoffs should be sent by email on Tuesday. The company will release its quarterly results on Thursday.
