“There is room for everyone”: Syria attracts $28 billion in investments since the fall of Al-Assad

The Syrian economy is in full reconstruction. Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad ten months ago, Syria has benefited from 28 billion in investments.

The fall of the Assad regime boosts the Syrian economy. Acting Syrian President Ahmad al-Shareh said on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia that Syria had attracted $28 billion in investment over the past ten months since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad.

The president cited this figure during a speech in Riyadh, within the framework of the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference, where he was present as a guest of honor at the ninth edition of this important investment forum.

Syria has begun the immense task of rebuilding a devastated economy, after more than a decade of war that left tens of thousands dead, millions displaced and destroyed many cities.

For decades under the rule of the Assad clan, the country was unable to attract significant investment due to multiple sanctions targeting its government.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Saudi Arabia has sought closer ties with a country that has long been in the sphere of influence of Iran and Russia.

In May, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman convinced US President Donald Trump to lift US sanctions against Syria.

The crown prince also arranged a historic meeting between Donald Trump and Ahmad al-Chareh, a former jihadist. In February he traveled to Riyadh to make his first trip abroad.

Born in 1982 in Saudi Arabia, where his father worked, Ahmed al-Chareh spent his first seven years there.

In July, Saudi Arabia signed investment and partnership agreements with Syria worth $6.4 billion, aimed at supporting post-war reconstruction.

In April, that country and Qatar committed to paying off Syria’s debt to the World Bank, which amounts to about $15 million.

On October 21, the World Bank estimated the costs of post-conflict reconstruction in Syria at $216 billion.
