The federation of beauty companies (Febea) expressed concern on Friday about a possible loss of 620 million euros in turnover in the cosmetics sector in 2026 due to customs duties in the United States, as reported by its general delegate Emmanuel Guichard in BFM Business.
Febea commissioned a study from the firm Asteres to quantify the impact of American customs tariffs on the sector. According to this study, “the impact could be 21% fewer exports to the United States, or 620 million euros in lost turnover with a threat to 11,000 jobs, including 2,700 direct jobs,” he explained.
Debates around a European text to gain competitiveness
In the first half of the year, exports to the United States have already fallen by 12%, unlike other French export sectors, the general delegate lamented. The sector is penalized by the combination of 15% customs duties on cosmetics (July 28, 2025) as well as additional 50% customs duties on metal components of packaging (August 19, 2025), associated with the depreciation of the dollar against the euro, details a press release.
Faced with this, Emmanuel Guichard recommended the mobilization of France to vote on a European text on cosmetics: “in the very short term, there is a text under discussion at the European level (…) which, if voted, would allow us to gain a lot of competitiveness through reductions in administrative tasks on our ingredients used in cosmetics (…) and we see that France’s mobilization slows down a bit” due to the political situation.
