Rail transport: what are the differences between RER, Transilien and TER?

In a video posted on YouTube on Sunday, Emmanuel Macron announced his desire to create the equivalent of the Parisian RER in ten French metropolises. A network to differentiate from the offer of Transilien and TER.

“The RER is not only in Paris”. In a video posted on YouTube on Sunday, Emmanuel Macron announced that he wanted to develop an equivalent of the Ile-de-France Regional Express Network (RER) in ten French cities, hoping to speed up existing projects, particularly in Bordeaux, Lille or Strasbourg.

Inaugurated in 1977, the RER is the public transport network that serves Paris and its agglomeration. It consists of 5 lines, two of which are managed by both the RATP and the SNCF depending on the sections (RER A and B) while the other three (C, D and E) are fully operated by the SNCF.

These RER lines operated exclusively by SNCF are part of the Transilien commuter train network, a trademark belonging to SNCF Voyageurs. In addition to lines C, D and E, Transilien is made up of eleven other non-RER lines serving the main stations in Ile-de-France, as well as some stations in Normandy and Hauts-de-France.

higher cadence

Unlike the Transilien commuter trains, which leave and end at one of the main Parisian stations, the RER crosses the capital making stops at stations where the metro also runs. The speed of the RER is also higher than that of the Transilien.

Transilien is the Ile-de-France equivalent of the TER (Regional Express Transport) that circulates in the rest of the metropolitan territory. The TER brand, which is one of the 5 SNCF Voyageurs entities, thus operates regional and local coach and train lines.

Financed by the regions, the TER transport 1.1 million passengers each day compared to 2.7 million for the Transilien in the Paris region, according to the SNCF.
