“With 78% mistrust in the future, the economic morale of the French is still at its lowest point in December.” The latest Odoxa* barometer for BFM Business, Challenges and Abeille Assurances expresses a strong concern that now affects more than three quarters of French people.
And for cause. Reaching 15.8%, inflation “perceived” by the French questioned by this barometer is “2.5 times higher than the level recorded by INSEE, 2 times higher than the level estimated by the French at the beginning of the decade, 6 times higher than their estimate of last year’s inflation”, indicate the authors of the barometer.
This phenomenon has a de facto impact on consumption. Almost three-quarters of the French report that they are encouraged (73%) to reduce their consumption in all major spending items: heating (79%), daily consumer goods (76%) and even food products (64%) ).
To cope with this situation, 7 out of 10 French people touch their savings in different ways. 43% of the French used their savings to make ends meet. Only 36% used it before last summer. But also, they are increasingly taking loans or thinking about it. “9% have already contracted new loans and 27% plan to do one or the other shortly.”
* Survey carried out online on November 23 and 24, 2022 on a sample of 1,005 French representatives of the French population aged 18 and over.
