Postponement of the retirement age: 75% of the French are skeptical about its impact on the employment of the elderly

Given the lower employment rate of the elderly, the French prefer to lower the legal retirement age and encourage companies to hire with financial aid, according to an Elabe survey published this Thursday.

A pension reform? Yes, but not just anyone. Elisabeth Borne confirmed this Friday in the parisian that a pension reform would be presented in mid-December, after consultation with the social partners. The government text could propose the extension of working time, with a legal retirement age potentially pushed back to 64 or 65, depending on discussions in Parliament.

But 75% of the French believe that such a measure would not improve the employment rate of the elderly, indicates a new survey by Elabe for the echoesRadio Classique and the Institut Montaigne.

The lowering of the retirement age acclaimed by workers

But the measure leaves a large majority of French people in all categories of the population skeptical, particularly those between the ages of 50 and 64 (82%). Even Emmanuel Macron voters (60%) are not convinced of the positive impact of postponing the retirement age on the employment rate of older people.

According to data from the Ministry of Labor, the employment rate of older adults aged 55 to 64 was 56% in the 4th quarter of 2021.

And to correct the trend, the French are rather in favor of measures out of step with those of the government. When asked to choose three measures out of the ten that are offered, 41% of those surveyed believe that the legal retirement age should be lowered.

A measure especially recommended by workers (57%) but also by people aged 35 to 49 (53%). Another proposal cited by 42% of the French: financially encourage companies to hire older people by reducing social security contributions or with financial aid for hiring.

Respondents are also in favor (41%) of financial sanctions against companies that lay off older people. A clue that Elisabeth Borne has not yet mentioned, that she wants to “create an index like the one that has been set for professional equality and that forces transparency with indicators such as training, hiring.”
