An additional municipal swimming pool will close in France. Faced with rising energy prices, the swimming pool in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, will lower the curtain for two months, instead of the usual two weeks of closure during the end-of-year celebrations.
According to the deputy mayor of Rochefort, in charge of sports, Jean-Marie Le Bras, the reopening has been postponed until February 19. “In this period, there will be about 100,000 euros in savings,” he underlines into the BFMTV microphone.
Dozens of swimming pools affected in France
In total, six associations, 400 families and all schoolchildren regularly visit the Rochefort swimming pool. The decision to close it was not easy, as the deputy mayor confesses.
“We think a lot before making the decision (…) We measure the impact,” he says. “We didn’t have so many other solutions in the current context,” explains the municipal councilor.
The Rochefort swimming pool is not the first to have to close, given the rise in energy prices. Since September, dozens of municipal swimming pools have been forced to close suddenly, such as in Versailles (Yvelines), Limoges (Haut Vienne) or Granville (Manche).
